What Comes After Clarity? How to Make Purposeful Career Moves
May 24, 2025
Gaining clarity about your career direction is an important milestone—but clarity alone doesn’t resolve the fears that often surface when it’s time to act.
What if I make the wrong move?
What if I end up in a role that’s just as unfulfilling—or worse?
What if I have to start over, take a pay cut, or explain my choices to people who don’t get it?
If you’ve had these thoughts, you’re not alone. Many of my clients feel pressure to get it “right,” especially after investing time reflecting on what matters to them. That’s why the next step isn’t about having perfect certainty—it’s about building momentum with intention and care.
Acknowledge the Fear, Then Choose Your Next Move
Fear is normal. It signals that you care—and that you’re about to step into new territory. The goal isn’t to eliminate fear, but to move through it with structure and support.
Guiding Questions:
– What specific fear is coming up for you right now?
– What would it mean to take one step—even if you're not 100% sure it's “right”?
– Who could help you think this through in a nonjudgmental way?
Small Moves That Create Real Momentum
You don’t have to overhaul everything overnight. In fact, when you’re navigating uncertainty, small, strategic actions are often more effective. They let you gather insight, build confidence, and adjust as you go.
Here are some ways to move forward—without needing everything figured out:
-
Reconnect with your values. Choose one opportunity this week that aligns with what matters to you—even if it’s small.
-
Talk to someone in a role you’re curious about. Instead of planning your whole pivot, ask a few thoughtful questions and listen with openness.
-
Notice what energizes you. Pay attention to how you feel when doing certain tasks or having certain conversations—there are clues there.
-
Explore without committing. Consider volunteering, mentoring, or advising in a new space to see how it feels before making a leap.
-
Reflect in writing. Sometimes you won’t see the patterns until you write them down.
Guiding Questions:
– What small move could you take this week that feels both doable and meaningful?
– When have you made a shift in the past and been glad you did? What helped you take the leap?Hear from John, a client who overcame fear and uncertainty after 13 years in the same role—and made a purposeful, energizing move with coaching support.
Action Builds Confidence
The truth is: waiting for fear to disappear usually means waiting forever. Confidence doesn’t show up fully formed—it’s something you grow through aligned action.
When you take steps rooted in your clarity—steps that honor your values, strengths, and goals—you start to trust yourself more. And when you trust yourself, making decisions becomes less about getting it “perfect” and more about building a life and career that feels like a good fit for who you are now.
