How to Make a Job Search Feel More Sustainable

Job searching can be exhausting.

Even when you are doing all the “right” things, the process can still feel uncertain, discouraging, and hard to sustain over time.

That is one reason I keep returning to this reminder: a job search does not only need to be effective. It also needs to be sustainable.

Sustainability in a job search can look like:

  • creating a rhythm you can maintain
  • stepping back when you need perspective
  • noticing when fear is driving urgency
  • returning to what matters, not only what feels pressing
  • giving yourself space to reflect, not only react

A steadier approach does not mean you care less. It means you are prioritizing moving through the process in a way that supports your energy, your clarity, and your ability to keep going.

If your search has been feeling heavy lately, these resources may help:

When Career Uncertainty Affects More Than One Person
A career transition often reaches beyond the person directly living it. For some people, this season means navigating a job search, a layoff, a career pivot, burnout, or the pressure of not knowing what comes next. For others, it means caring about someone who is moving through that uncertainty and wanting to help, while not always knowing how. I see both in my work. Some of my clients are the ...
Women’s Visibility, Leadership Presence, and the Joy of Discovery
After speaking with Kimberly Paulk, founder of Purple Thread Strategies, on Conversations with Erica, I kept thinking about the relationship between visibility, clarity, and trust. What stayed with me was not a formula. It was a way of approaching growth. Our conversation was about more than career advancement in the conventional sense. It was about becoming more visible, not for the sake of ...
